10 things to enjoy in Santiago, Cape Verde

1 – Simplicity

When you don’t know what to expect from the world, you will be happy with small things and achievements. That’s what I learned when I was there. You don’t need to own things to be pleased with the life you have. The simplicity of everyday will thrill you and make all our problems seem foolish.

I can start to talk about how I felt welcomed. I was there for the Easter to visit my uncle that lives there and in three minutes I was in a house as part of a big family.

2- “Sucupira” Market

Here you can find almost everything! Don’t expect for souvenirs but for products of the island. If you want to buy cheap clothes is the place to be! But you should have time to spend and try to find your number or something that you like because everything is mixed up. So…take some time to shop!

3- Tarrafal

This beach of Tarrafal is an amazing place to see the beauty of nature, the fishermen at work or the old prison camp. Here you will find yellow sand beaches and smiley people. Calm is the keyword and the fresh fish will be a must try. The gastronomy, history and the wonderful photos you can do, unite in one place.

4- Cidade Velha

Used to serve as the capital of Cape Verde and is the birthplace of Cape Verde.  Born as the city of Ribeira Grande, was founded in 1462, two years after the arrival of the Portuguese navigators to the island of Santiago. Here you can find the beautiful Royal Fortress of Saint Philip.

If you stay in this Islands you will get in touch with funaná, coladeira or batuque. What is that? Well…music! And this is the kind of music that can be contagious. You will dance till your legs can’t stand it! Party for the inhabitants of Cape Verde is the priority of their lives! Why cry if you can dance and party? You will ill your problems with good music and difficult dance moves.

The Malagueta is a mountain massif located in the northern part of the island of Santiago that offers a panoramic view of the island that deserves to be contemplated. It is Nature at its most unspoiled and serene state.

9- Gastronomy

Have you ever tried “Cachupa”? You definitely Should do it! It uses all of the ingredients available on hand to make a richly flavorful meaty dish. You will taste a mix of beans, corn,  chorizo and other ingredients in a way that you won’t believe that it’s possible. You will never say that you don’t like beans again!
