5 basic rules for a positive impact when traveling
Traveling is one of the most enriching experiences we can have. These basic rules for a positive impact when planning trips should be common sense, but unfortunately they are not always followed. Here are five fundamental rules to ensure that you leave a positive impact when you travel to other countries.
1. choose sustainable accommodation
Choosing hotels, hostels or local accommodation that follow ecological practices is a significant step. Many establishments adopt green policies, such as using renewable energy, recycling and saving water.
If you’re staying in Portugal, keep an eye on Peggada because it’s a good starting point for finding sustainable accommodation. There are other very interesting projects such as Fairbnb or Socialbnb. If, however, you can only find options for your destination on Booking, don’t forget to use the sustainable travel filter.
2. Supports the local economy
Whenever possible, she buys artisanal products and goes to local markets. Eating in family-run restaurants and using local tour guides not only provides a more authentic experience, but also directly helps the economy of the community you’re visiting. Try to book experiences with people in the area directly, but if you can’t find them, using some platforms like EatWith or WithLocals can help some locals make an extra income and you’re sure to have a different and very authentic evening.
3. Reduce the use of plastic
Carry a reusable water bottle, cloth shopping bags and avoid products with excessive packaging. Small actions like these can significantly reduce the amount of plastic waste generated during your trip. In some places you can’t drink tap water, so it’s important to bear in mind that health comes first.
In Japan, for example, I discovered an app called Mymizu to find out where to refill my bottle. When I went to Bali I also used an app like this. At the time (2019) I even worked on bringing it to Portugal, but the project ended up stopping the expansion. Another app that has a lot of points globally is the Refill app.
4. Respects Local Culture and Traditions
It sounds basic, but believe me, it’s not. The most recent example is the situation with the geishas in Kyoto.
Research the customs and traditions of the place you’re visiting. Showing respect for the local culture, learning a few words in the local language and following the appropriate codes of conduct makes a big difference to how you are received and the impact you leave.
5. Choose Sustainable Transportation
I’ll start by saying that I’m very bad at cycling, so it’s always a difficult choice for me. If you can, opt for public transport, walking or cycling whenever possible. These options are not only more environmentally friendly, but also allow for a deeper immersion in the local culture and the discovery of unique places that may go unnoticed by car.
Traveling with awareness and intention can transform your experiences into something even more meaningful. By adopting these practices, you not only enrich your adventures, but also contribute to a more sustainable and harmonious world. Have a good trip!
